So many adventures couldn't happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams swinging out of the blue
We let them come true
Forever young, I wanna be forever young
- Forever Young - The Youth Group
We always say we'll keep our dreams for another day. We'll start writing that novel after we retire. We'll think about starting a family once our careers are stable. We'll wait till we've got time before we take that vacation we always talked about.
We've been so used to keeping all our dreams at bay, to saying "later", that an entire lifetime goes by, and at the end, when we sit and think back on our lives, we realize we never really lived after all.
We're in a world filled with cold, hard, materialistic ideals. It's always about who gets the better job, better pay, better house, better car...all supposedly leading up to the better life. Like any living species, we've adapted to suit our surroundings. All we know is that we need to keep climbing the career ladder, keep reaching for the bigger money bag. In our process of following the world's new meaning of improvement, we've forgotten all the dreams we started out with.
Stop and think back to a time not so long ago, where you had a path you wanted to take, but turned away because it wasn't what society had decreed. Is that a road you could have travelled on? Would you have lasted through it all? Do you regret not following it? Do you question yourself every single day "what if"?
Maybe we've all been too tied up with the "what ifs". Maybe it's time for us to realize that we won't be young forever. Maybe it's time for us to look back on our past and see what we've left behind. Maybe it's time to revisit the dreams and ideals we've locked up for so long. Maybe we should think about actually living our dreams.
And maybe, just maybe....it's time to put aside the "maybe" and do.
